What is proof of ownership?

What is proof of ownership?
It is something that proves you have owned the item. For example, we could ask for a receipt for an item that you've reported stolen, like an iPhone.
When you lodge a claim you may be asked to provide proof of ownership for an item.
What can I use as proof of ownership?
The best form of proof of ownership is the original purchase receipt. If you no longer have the receipt, a bank or credit card statement can also be used.
Tip: Most retailers can give you a copy of the receipt of your purchase from their computer records. We accept reprints of the receipt as proof.
If you've purchased something online, you can provide a copy of the online purchase record, email receipt or auction confirmation as proof of ownership.
What else could help?
Any warranty or guarantee documents are another source for establishing ownership, as are the valuations for jewellery items or family heirlooms. If the jewellery item was part of a set or pair, the part that you still have can be used as proof of ownership.
Sometimes we can accept electronic copies of photographs as proof of ownership- for instance if you're wearing an item of jewellery. We will review these case by case.
Operating manuals, empty packaging boxes or containers are not considered reliable proof, although these can be considered in conjunction with other items.
All claims are considered on their own merit along with all forms of proof of ownership, and we will consider all factors when reviewing a claim.
How do I send my proof of ownership?
You can upload proof of ownership photos or documents through My Insurance when you make a claim online.
If you have already submitted your claim, simply log back in, go to the claims menu, select the relevant claim and upload the documents. You can also send it to If you send through email, please include your claim number.
